Project Profile - Sugar Shack
This sugar shack is definitely unique, being the only one situated in an urban setting. It is owned by a non-profit organization called Action Vanier that was formed to help the community. The City of Ottawa has given free use of land in Beechwood forest near the old City Hall of Vanier. The organization raised the money to build the original structure over a five year period through community bingo games.
After operating for ten years, the city felt that the sugar shack was getting too big and needed a commercial restaurant kitchen and fully accessible washrooms. We submitted a tender, and won the job to build the addition to match the old building. The organization teaches young children how taffy and maple syrup are made, and also hosts functions serving the traditional lumberjack meals.
